2012 Presidential Elections – Teaching Opportunities

Election Day, November 6, is just around the corner! While you may feel overwhelmed by television and radio ads, phone calls, and 24-hour news coverage of President Obama and Governor Romney, the 2012 Presidential Elections are an excellent teaching opportunity for students of all ages. Help your students understand how important it is for Americans to exercise their right to vote by holding your own classroom mock election, discussing the role of the electoral college, and reviewing the history of the executive office.

Do you remember learning about Margaret Chase Smith? I remember learning about her, which is shocking considering how many years ago I was in school… but we don’t need to get into that. 🙂  Margaret Chase Smith ran for President in 1964 and was the first woman to serve in both houses of the United States Congress (1940-1973). She was the longest-serving female Senator in history! (Until just recently, when Senator Barbara Mikulski started her 5th term in 2011.)

Download this Mock Election Guide associated with the book Margaret Chase Smith: A Woman for President by Lynn Plourde. It’s sure to make a lasting impression on your students! The book is probably in your library, you may already have it, or you can get it here.

Below are more free downloads that you may find helpful during the weeks leading up to November 6, ELECTION DAY.

Here is a concise and simple student guide to “How a President Gets Elected

Game Download: Election Bingo procedures and bingo cards and vocabulary list (Even if you don’t download the bingo game, the vocabulary list may be very helpful to your students.)

Game Download: Three Branches, One Government

Help your students understand the process of electing officials and the power of the vote! Hopefully you can enjoy one or all of these great activities during this 2012 Presidential Election. Happy teaching! 🙂

Bullying Prevention Month

October is busy! Of course there is Halloween, and also World Wide Teacher Day, World Wide Character Counts Month, and Bullying Prevention Month. Most of you have probably witnessed some sort of bullying in your classrooms, be it teasing words or physical injury. It’s even easier to find cruelty in the seemingly anonymous world of the Internet, where most students spend a considerable amount of time. We know you do your part to help break the bullying cycle. And we thank you. Here is a helpful guide to “bully proof your classroom“.

Show kids that words and actions have consequences; it isn’t funny to be mean.

Friendly Reminder: ANOTHER BragTag™ giveaway on another awesome teacher’s blog.

Have a great weekend! : )

(now closed) World Wide Character Counts Week – GIVEAWAY

2012 World Wide Character Counts Week: October 21-27.

Did you know: In 1992 Six Pillars of Character were identified by an esteemed group of leading ethicists, educators and youth service professionals. These “universal core values” transcend religious, political and socioeconomic differences. The Six Pillars of Character are: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.

The seed of World Wide Character Counts Week: On October 19 2009 Senator Chris Dodd stood before the senate and said: “We know that in order to face our challenges as communities and as a Nation, we need our children to be both well‐educated and trained‐‐and that begins with instilling character in our children.” Senator Dodd continued: “Character education programs work. Currently, there are character education programs across all 50 States in rural, urban and suburban areas at every grade level. Schools across the country that have adopted strong character education programs report better student performance, fewer discipline problems, and increased student involvement within the community.”

We would like to hear how your character education program works in your classroom or school.

WIN Character BragTags™ for your classroom:

1. Follow our blog (upper right hand side of page – you must click the confirmation email you receive)

2. Comment here: What do you do for character education during “character counts” week, or throughout the school year?

THREE winners will receive 35 Character Counts BragTags™ and 35 neck chains FREE! We have MANY to choose, or design your own character counts tag.

Winners will be announced Oct 9.

Good Luck! : )
